Although originally thought to be an image by
Thomas Keith
, we now believe this image to be by his brother-in-law and collaborator, John Forbes White. This decision is based on expert guidance given where comparisons have been made with negatives of similar views in other collections, and the nearness of the views depicted to White's home.
Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city with a population of over two hundred thousand. It is situated on the east coast of the country, with the main part of the city lying between the mouths of the rivers Don and Dee. It is composed of two areas, Old Aberdeen which was founded in the 7th or 8th century, and New Aberdeen which developed after the city was burned by Edward III in 1336. Historically Aberdeen has been a centre for paper production, granite mining, shipbuilding, and the woollens, linen and cotton industries. Today a large percentage of the population is employed by the oil industry. Aberdeen remains an important centre for fishing and maritime trade.
