Title
Tod's Close - a poem
Description
Donald Campbell's poem is inspired by the sketch by Walter Geikie:
Tod's Close
Here, in the shadow of the Citadel
where once the Auld Queen* knelt in prayer
where Mass was chanted as the smell
of fragrant incense filled the caller air,
we still recall that it was here as well
that Davie Baird first found the flare
to thole the misery and utter hell
of Seringapatam. When he was there,
held prisoner in Hyder Ali's cell,
wounded and in chains, he'd swear
to conquer hardship and dispel
all thoughts of degradation and despair;
a bitter tale that he survived to tell
here, in the shadow of the Citadel.
