Envelope for letter regarding bread shortages sent to all householders from Lord Devonport, Food Controller, on 29 May 1917. 'On His Majesty's Service' and 'To the Head of the Household' typed in black ink on stiff brown paper. Back of envelope has gummed triangular flap.

The letter contained in this envelope calls on everyone to reduce their consumption of bread. It encourages the wearing of a purple ribbon to show dedication to food economy.

The letter is signed by Lord Devonport, Food Controller. Hudson Kearley (later Viscount Devonport) was a grocer and politician. Appointed Minister of Food Control in 1916, he was the author of the proposal to introduce rationing.
