The song sheet Lily Dale was published in the mid 1850s by the London publisher Campbell, Ransford and Co. Lilly Dale was first published in America in 1852 by the American composer H.S. Thompson. It was a very popular music hall hit at the time and is still a big hit within country and western and traditional music genres. The song laments the passing of the young girl Lilly Dale, now buried in the churchyard.
The song sheet cover is very simple with the song title, Lilly Dale in the centre, in a blue, carnival font with publishers details at the bottom, all contained within a frame.
