The illustration by an unknown artist is entitled Mizpah, a Hebrew word meaning watchtower. Mizpah was interpreted as a pledge made between two parties before God to watch over them, during a period of separation. This evolved in the Victorian era as a pledge made between couples before they were separated by the man going off to war. A ring was often exchanged as the material expression of the Mizpah vow and in the 1880's it became popular for a man to give to his betrothed before going off to the battlefronts of the Boar War.
