The music sheet illustration for Passing of Salome Waltz by W. George has a theatrical quality, with Salome in the spotlight, an exotically dressed figure with long red hair, her face and arm are raised upwards in a dramatic pose of supplication. W. George has illustrated Salome with rich tones of reds and blues using the beam of light to show her as the main protagonist with the background fading into obscurity with its more muted purples. The drama and exotic atmosphere of the illustration reflects Victorian and Edwardian fascination with the story of Salome, following on from the famous play by Oscar Wilde and opera by Strauss. Archibald George had himself penned a previous waltz Vision of Salome Waltz in 1907. Archibald Joyce (1873 - 1963) was often referred to as The English Waltz King, a popular light music composer, who with his own dance orchestra was prolific in creating waltzes and was in great demand during the peak of his career.
