Joseph Warwick Moore (1869-1931) came from a musical background, his father was a harpist, and he played violin and piano. He produced hundreds of popular piano compositions during his career. Joseph Warwick Moore was most prolific from 1890 to 1920, and his parlour music compositions proved very popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. He published under his own name and also used the pseudonym of Emile Gastelle to garner extra interest. He held the position of musical director of Southampton's Grand Theatre for 30 years. It was perhaps his reputation and standing that helped him attract several Royal Academy painters as the lithographers of his sheet music. Frank Aveline is listed as a Royal Academy exhibitor in 1905 for a painting titled 'Poppies'. Little else is known of Frank Aveline's career.
The illustration is an elegant close up portrait of a woman in post first world war fashion, with black hair, under a black hat and contrasted with a large mustard yellow bow. The dress appears in the same yellow, with a white fan like collar, the neckline of which ends in a smaller black bow, which finishes the portrait in a flourish of Frank Aveline's signature.
