King of the Revels Lancers refers to the boisterous celebrations traditionally held in royal courts and infamous for ribald theatrical merriment. In the Victorian era jesters had a satirical role within musical entertainment. The illustration shows a grinning court jester in red perched on a human horse with his legs pointing backwards and a whip waving wildly in the air.
H.G. Banks was a well known colour lithographer of his time who worked with Alfred Concanen. H.G.Banks worked mainly in conjunction with the publishers Francis, Day & Hunter, who together were responsible for producing many popular music sheet covers illustrating a witty commentary on London life at the time.
