The illustration for Israel in Egypt shows the impressive interior of The Crystal Palace, which hosted Handel concerts for many years. The illustration shows the vastness of the crowds attending, with seating for up to 4000 people and at the very focal point is the 4500 pipe great organ.
Edward Francis Rimbault was born in 1816, into a French Hugenot family, the son of an organist who went on at an early age to become a well respected organist. He was interested in the history of music and co-founded the Musical Antiquarian Society, within which he had an active role, authoring and editing several books on the subject. Although he composed a few pieces he was better known for his editing and arranging of pieces and the extensive library collection he established during his life.
John Brandard, born in Birmingham in 1812, was responsible for creating high quality chromolithographs for music sheet covers. He developed the art of the chromolithograph, using high quality materials and draughtsmanship, which granted him longevity in the music sheet cover industry. John Brandard forged a productive partnership with the lithograph printing company M. & N. Hanhart, who together produced hundreds of covers over a period spanning four decades, until his death in 1863.
