M.V. Kaimanawa was built at Henry Robb, Shipbuilders, Leith for the Union SS Company of New Zealand Limited, launched on the 11th of March 1944 by Mrs J M Erskine, and sailed on the 5th of July 1944.
Kaimanawa was the last merchant ship to be completed under war conditions. She maintained a regular service of supplies to the armies in Europe and was undamaged in spite of repeated air attacks. After the war she went to New Zealand to join the fleet of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Limited.
