This picture of old North Leith shows J. & G. Innes, shipbuilders, 1 Old Church Street, in the foreground and St Ninian's Church and Manse in the background. J. & G. Innes were there from c.1840-1870.
St Ninian's Church, built in 1497, was the parish church of North Leith from 1606 when the parish was created until 1816 when the new North Leith Church opened in Madeira Street to accommodate the growing congregation. The premises were then rented to other churches.
Innes' shipyard was opened by Robert McMillan Innes, a former apprentice of Thomas Morton, in the 1830s, and later taken over by J. & G. Innes.
