The close was named for William Meiklejohn, a spirit dealer at that address in the 1820s. It was one of a number of small closes demolished to make way for Henderson Street as part of the Leith Improvement Scheme. An Act of Parliament was passed allowing this in 1880 but construction of Henderson Street began in 1886 and was not completed until the 1890s.
