From 1838, when the Leith Dock Commission took ownership of the harbour, trade steadily expanded. Although new docks had been built in the early 19th century The Shore was still a busy trading area. The barrels in the ship's cargo at the right of this picture probably contained wine, perhaps port or sherry because of the duty imposed on French wine by the Government after the Napoleonic Wars. At the peak of the wine trade in Leith there were about 100 warehouses storing wine and brandy.
