Edinburgh libraries used the Browne issue sytem for lending books. The readers pocket- style tickets were matched with a card from the book they had borrowed and the tickets were filed in trays at the counter as seen in this image.
The Lending Library on the ground floor is exactly where it was on the opening day. The public, however were unable to browse and had to request items from a board listing titles above the doorway. When a book was IN or available it showed Blue, when OUT or on loan it showed Red. Most items were loaned for one week.
