Title
Off to the sweet country of the windmills
Description
"The feature of the flight of the ex-Emperor and his son the ex-Crown Prince into Holland is that, unlike their prototypes Sancho Panza and Don Quixote, although they have always been tilting at windmills they are now deprived of their lances. Ignominy has been added to utter foolishness. Napoleon did maintain a certain dignity in exile, but these creepers over the border went into exile unhonoured and unwept. True, the Crown Prince offered to remain with his army, but the hero of Verdun was not wanted, and the Country of the Windmills was advised as the best place for a long rest cure."

Louis Raemaekaers' drawings are reproduced by kind permission of the
Louis Raemaekers Foundation
.
Raemaekers presents the Crown Prince Wilhelm and Kaiser Wilhelm as Don Quixote and Sancho Panza tilting at windmills. By choosing this allusion, he both poses them as comical fools and taunts their flight into the Netherlands, a country associated with its windmills. The recognisable imagery of the figures as both specific political figures and the well-known characters from Miguel de Cervantes' 17th century novel adds to the humour of the piece.
The
Louis Raemaekers Foundation
have published a book of his works entitled, 'Louis Raemaekers - with pen and pencil as a weapon'.
