Description
"The United States of America were so called by the Congress of the revolted British Provinces on 9th September 1776, and their flag was declared to be thirteen stripes, alternately red and white, and thirteen stars in a blue field, corresponding with the number of states on the 20th June 1777. As a result of the Stamp Act imposed by the British Parliament a Declaration of Rights was issued on 4th November 1774, and on 4th July 1776 America declared herself 'free, sovereign, and independent.' Thus did America make her first stand for liberty, strangely enough against Great Britain, with whom later she has become allied in the fight for world-liberty. The fourth of July is therefore essentially America's day, and stands like a rock confronting all Presidents of the United States."
