"A feature that distinguishes M. Raemaekers' portrayal of the British soldier from that of almost any other war artist is the higher plane on which he invariably sets him, and the present volume shows that as the war neared its end his appreciation of his subject continuously advanced, until he produced a series of idylls endued with all the fine qualities brought out by a soldier's life. ... M. Raemaekers has never attempted to catch the public by exaggerated caricatures, but has throughout endeavoured to hand down to posterity true portraits of the man as he has grown to know him in the intimacy of the trenches."
