A German soldier holds a young Allied solider as he dies. The title speaks for the dying man and demonstrates the humanity of men fighting on both sides of the war. As he dies, the soldier thinks of his mother, and the German soldier holds his hand in a gesture of comfort, gazing at the horror of death. While Raemaekers depicts the German government as brutal and foolish, he recognises the pain, sacrifice and humanity of the common soldier.
The
Louis Raemaekers Foundation
have published a book of his works entitled, 'Louis Raemaekers - with pen and pencil as a weapon'.
