The sale and production of meat saw severe regulation and rationing by both sides during the First World War. In Britain, meat shortages, high prices, and irregular distribution eventually inspired government intervention; the Ministry of Food imposed restrictions on farmers and butchers in effort to control the meat supply.
Inequality in the division of meat was evident in Aberdeen, where in January 1918 half the city's butcher shops were closed and the ones that remained open did not have their normal peace-time product or supply. Throughout much of Britain, cattle could not be obtained for sale or slaughter; beef stores were cut by one half and the public was encouraged to cut beef from their diets as a result.
