On 29th May 2014, Edinburgh staged heats of the Men's Pearl Izumi Tour series and the Women's Matrix Fitness Grand Prix series criterium cycle races. Criterium races are cycle races held on short courses usually mapped out on closed-off city streets. The Edinburgh course began on the Grassmarket, leading up steep Victoria Street, along George IV Bridge, turning sharply at the statue of Greyfriars Bobby and into Candlemaker Row to complete the lap in the Grassmarket. The race is run for 1 hour plus five laps of the course and the emphasis of the race is less on individual achievements and more on team effort. The winners of the Edinburgh heat were Jon Mould who went on to win the tour series and Katie Archibald, a Scottish rider.
