South Leith Parish Church is located near the north end of Leith Walk. The church, as it is seen today, was built by Thomas Hamilton in 1847-48. This nineteenth century structure incorporates elements of a fifteenth century chapel which had been partially destroyed during the bombardment of Leith in 1560. This chapel had effectively become a parish church for Leith in 1560 after Restalrig Church was demolished by order of the General Assembly. Its status was formalised by parliament in 1609.
