Description
Wilhelmina Barns-Graham is perhaps best known as a member of the St Ives School, alongside such artists as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron. She moved to Cornwall in 1940, following the conclusion of her studies in Edinburgh, and maintained a working studio in St Ives throughout her career. However, she also preserved links with her native Scotland. From the early 1960s onwards she began spending extended periods based near St Andrews in Fife.

This painting dates from Barns-Graham's mainly abstract late period. It is based on the experience of crossing the Forth Rail Bridge - a subject evoked by the red-orange brushmarks intersecting across the grey and white background. Remarkably, the artist produced this bold and expressive painting when she was already in her mid 80s.
