Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops, restaurants, supermarkets,a library and hospitals.

The founder Andrew Duncan, was a campaigner for more humane treatment for people with mental health problems after seeing his friend Robert Ferguson, suffer in the old Edinburgh Bedlam. The original lodge house built near Millar Crescent is now situated at 23 Tipperlinn Road.
