Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops,restaurants,supermarkets,a library and hospitals.

Midlothian Snowsports Centre - previously known as Hillend Ski Centre has the longest dry ski slope in Europe. It has 2 main slopes and 2 Nursery slopes. The centre was a gift to the people of Edinburgh by George Boyd Anderson, who made his fortune as a rubber planter in Malaysia.

The Pentland Hills are a range of hills south-west of Edinburgh. Designated a Regional Park in 1984 it is used for a variety of recreational activities including hill walking,mountain biking and horse riding. Much of Edinburgh's water supply comes from the reservoirs in the hills.
