Lamb's House is a merchant's house dating back to the late 16th or early 17th centuries. As a merchant’s property it comprised both a house and a warehouse within the five-storey building.
It is widely thought to be the house of Andro Lamb who is said to have been visited by Mary Queen of Scots after her arrival in Leith in 1561. However, this story is discounted by RCAHMS (Historic Environment Scotland) who date the property sometime in the 1610s.
It was altered internally and had windows enlarged in the 1700s, and although once one of the grandest houses in Leith, had fallen derelict by the early 1930s. It was restored in 1938 for the Marquis of Bute. In 1958 it was presented to the National Trust by his son and was further restored, and its use converted into a day care centre for older people. The house was bought in 2010 by the conservation architects Kristin Hannesdottir and Nick Groves-Raine to provide office and living space. A sympathetic small garden annex was completed in 2015.
