Thomas Ross was born at Wardheads, Errol, and attended local schools before going to Glasgow around 1855 to work as an assistant to architect Alexander Kirkland.
In 1862 he began as an assistant to David MacGibbon in Edinburgh, and was made a partner in the firm of MacGibbon and Ross in 1872. Ross began sketching the architecture of Scotland along with his senior partner, contributing to the latter's public lectures, and culminating in the pair's major publications.
All that remains of the simple keep of Lamington Tower, are parts of its west and south walls and the foundations of the north and east walls. It stands on a gravel mound beside the River Clyde. The tower measures 38 3/4ft by 31 3/4ft; the ground floor was vaulted. A turret still exists at the north-west angle; from this MacGibbon and Ross date the tower to the late 16th or 17th century. This would agree with the stone dated 1589 with the initials E B which the Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB) notes in the west wall. The New Statistical Account (NSA) states that the tower was blown up about 1780, its stones being used for farm buildings in the neighbourhood.
The tower probably occupies the site of an earlier structure, held by Hazelrig for Edward I, and taken by Wallace.
