Title
Douce Politicians
Description
In the early 19th century newspaper reading was a communal activity. Groups of neighbours and family members would gather to hear the news read aloud and then discuss the affairs of state. In this etching Geikie depicts a central seated figure reading outside a thatched cottage. The men beside him listen and ponder, while two children play in the foreground under the gaze of their mother.

The title of the artwork, Douce Politicians, adds an element of wry wit. In this context, the old Scots word 'douce' means sedate, sober or respectable. The villagers assemble to listen, debate and voice their opinions, even though they may have little understanding of politics. The artist's tone is tongue-in-cheek without descending into caricature.
