The 'Peacock's Complaint' is one of the most arresting images in the book. It combines elements from all three movements that affected Crane's later works, Arts and Crafts, Pre-Raphaelitism and Aestheticism. The Arts and Crafts influence is shown in the design of the throne, with the foliage pattern along the back. The woman is influenced by Pre-Raphaelitism. Her hair, with an ornate chignon and tumbling curl is very much reminiscent of that style. The peacock and its ornate feathers are one of the classic motifs of Aesthetic art. Crane did not limit himself to one type of art; instead he incorporated different styles in order to create his own unique style, bringing the best of contemporary art to children like never before.
