Bonaly Castle stands on the banks of a reservoir of the same name which was opened in 1853. This body of water lies approximately 6 miles from Edinburgh Castle and is primarily used to augment the water supplied to the Greater Edinburgh area from the Swanston Springs on the north side of the Pentlands.
