Several sites were considered for the Usher Hall building. Finally, it was decided to pull down Lothian Road School and build the concert hall on this site. Preparation of the site, including demolition of the school, and construction of the hall was completed in three years. The estimated cost of the site, building and furnishings was £134,000, of which the organ cost £4000.
