The Meadows were created on the site of the Borough Loch after it was drained in the mid 17th century. Originally called Hope Park after its creator, Sir Thomas Hope, the park became popular for both recreation and the grazing of livestock. During the Second World War the Meadows were used for the cultivation of vegetables to feed Edinburgh's residents, and the allotments were not removed until the mid 1960's. Golf has been played on the adjacent Links since possibly as early as the 15th century, with a club formally established there in 1535.
