Description

A road stretches into the distance. The road is unpaved and is lined by two stone walls one of which has a hedge running along the top of it. Tall lines of trees stand behind the walls and black out the sky over the roadway. One side of the road has a narrow pavement which a few blurry figures are walking along and the other side of the road has a grassy banking. A man in a black suit stands in the middle of the road in the distance looking towards the camera.

Colinton has a history as an autonomous town or parish since before the 11th century but was incorporated into the city of Edinburgh in 1920. Its origins lie as a mill town due to its position on the Water of Leith and mills producing textiles, snuff and paper all operated their at one time or another. It is believed that the first bank notes printed by the Bank of Scotland were printed on paper produced in a Colinton mill. Its close proximity to the Pentland hills and their many reservoirs could explain its inclusion in this volume of 'Photographs of Edinburgh Reservoirs'.
