Title
Foot of Fernielaw Road
Description
An unpaved country road runs into the distance of the image. The road is completely lined by two rows of trees, the branches of which meet above the road to cover the area with just a scrap of sky visible through the foliage. To the left forefront of the image stand gate posts with decorative stone domes on the top. In the distance at the far end of the road the figure of a man dressed in black walking away can just be made out.

Colinton has a history as an autonomous town or parish since before the 11th century but was incorporated into the city of Edinburgh in 1920. Its origins lie as a mill town due to its position on the Water of Leith and mills producing textiles, snuff and paper all operated their at one time or another. It is believed that the first bank notes printed by the Bank of Scotland were printed on paper produced in a Colinton mill. Its close proximity to the Pentland hills and their many reservoirs could explain its inclusion in this volume of 'Photographs of Edinburgh Reservoirs'.
