Possibly the world's first theatre, the Theatre of Bacchus (more commonly known as the
Theatre of Dionysus
) was built on south side of the Acropolis in Athens. Dating from the 4th century BC, it was dedicated to Dionysus (or Bacchus), the god of wine making and ecstasy, whose festivals were the driving force behind the development of Greek theatre.
