His Holiness the Dalai Lama was born to a farming family from Taktser, Amdo, northeastern Tibet on the 6th of July 1935 as Lhamo Thondup (now known as Tenzin Gyatso), His Holiness is the 14th Dalai Lama.
At a mere age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. The Dalai Lama is the highest-ranking spiritual master of Tibetan Buddhism. Since the 17th century, the Dalai Lama has been the political and spiritual leader of Tibet and considered a manifestation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara - an iconic figure who embodies the compassion of all Buddha's. Bodhisattvas are enlightened humans who have delayed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity.
On the 22nd of June 2012, His Holiness gave a public talk on Beyond Religion: Ethics for the Whole World as part of the 20th Anniversary of The Edinburgh Lectures at Usher Hall.
