Artist / maker
MacLean, Kevin
Date
2012
Type
Digital image
The memorial comprises a semi-circle of engraved Doddington freestone monoliths laid out like a sundial so that the sun illuminates each stone at 40 minute intervals. The main stone is incised with regimental battle honours and crests and the other stones are carved with military scenes depicting the regiment's past. The fencing is decorated with medallion heads of monarchs for whom the regiment served.
It was designed by Sir Frank Mears and sculptor C d'Orville Pilkington Jackson and was built to commemorate various campaigns fought by the regiment throughout the world from Tangiers in 1680 to Burma 1940-43.
