Biography
Wenceslaus Hollar was born in Prague on the 23rd of July in 1607. He developed his style in Germany and became a skilled etcher, particularly of landscapes and maps. In 1636, Hollar met the Earl of Arundel in Cologne and returned with him to his home in England. There he made copies of many works in the Earl's collection; he illustrated several views of London, for example. From 1644 to 1652 Hollar worked in Antwerp, and there created various still-life etchings. In 1652, Hollar returned to England in search of patronage, and worked for various booksellers until his death in 1677. Hollar died on the 25th of March in London. Central Library's Dance of Death Collection includes several editions of Hollar's Dance of Death.
