75 of us in the one appartment [apartment] - it's not a room, it's just a granary, but not as clean as most granaries! No floor-space regulations here either, methinks! We sleep, eat & live here - you should just see us! Stone floor & what was once white-washed walls & oh the cold at nights - but "are we down-hearted?" - "No" -
The poor cooks are having a terrible time trying to get food for us. Supplies are, of course, very short - no meat, no bread etc: Bully-beef at every meal, accompanied by stale, sour black bread gets monotonous - however, we're always so hungry, we're glad to devour anything!
Some of the Tommies' much despised "apple & plum" or "plum & apple" would be a godsend to us!! How Mrs. Milne ("boss" cook) manages at all I know not.
4 th We had hardly got our wards in order when the first of the wounded began to arrive - ie about 2 p.m. on the Wednesday & the ambulances continued to pour in till 3 a.m., till all our beds were full. Our transport girls did so splendidly & went right up
the line with their cars to fetch the wounded. We hadve some appalling cases, nearly all stretcher. Most of
