6th Oct:1916 "The Barracks" Megidia [Medgidia]

This is the first spare minute I've had for days. We have had a terrific week but are not dead yet!! I really forget when I wrote to you last, Sat:the 30th I think just before we bid adieu to our river steamer the "St George". We intrained [entrained] at mid-night that night, & arrived at Megidia [Medgidia] about 2 a.m. or thereabouts. That train "trip" was not a nice experience! We were packed like herring in the filthiest old train imaginable, there was very little sleep for anyone that night, so by the time we arrived here we were "rags", having had a very busy evening & night with the equipment. We "lived" in the said train for 2 nights, as when we arrived here found there was no place for us to put up, so we "pigged" it in the grubby old train till Tuesday. Megidia [Medgidia] is at present the staff headquarters & very near the war zone. All the civilians have evacuated & the town is very deserted looking & signs of bombs everywhere. The Russian authorities are most anxious we should keep our Hospital going
