Description
opera "The Queen of Spades" - music by Tschaikowsky [Tchaikovsky]. It is a beautiful piece & was so well acted & staged.
Next day - Sunday - I had an extra long lie & slacked about in the grounds all day morning. In the afternoon we went to a "Reception" at the Tennis Club given to us by the British Colony here. There was a tremendous "spread", to which the S.W. did full justice!
In the evening we all went to a gala Performance in the opera House - as the guests of the Governor & town of Odessa. We were most important I assure you & really looked quite imposing, the 75 of us in "full regimentals" filling the whole of the front of the dress-circle. The opera was glorious, 1st scene 2 acts from "The Queen of Spades"; 2nd part, 2nd act of "Aïda"; 3rd part from "Carmen", the Toreador act. It was a very full house & a most enthusiastic one, the audience being chiefly composed of military: the display of uniforms was fine.
