Description
It's right away down in the native's quarters & such a weird, fascinating spot. We poked about among the old booths & studied the different people - Russians, Poles, Greeks & Turks. Mrs. Milne procured some "treasures", the Parson doing the haggling for her. Then we went to the Turkish quarter & saw the people cooking their food on heated iron girdle affairs & eating it as they cooked it. It made us feel quite hungry! - so Mr. Foster took us to an old Turkish café where we par took of Turkish coffee, sherbet & honey-cake & various other sweet, weird concoctions. We came back along the "Deribas" the finest street in Odessa. We looked in to see the big cathedral. It is a huge building, white & grey marble inside with some beautiful mosaic work & jewelled Ikons - we were shown the Ikon that saved Odessa. Easter Eve 1915, when the people were praying before this beautiful old Ikon the Turkish battleships struck a mine just outside Odessa, so the people have made this Ikon into a special war shrine, as they believe Odessa would have been shelled if it had not been for their prayers.
