Description
these sunny, careless hours belong to days of bloody & not far distant war. The great Harbour is full of steamers mostly Russian & of course countless battle ships & destroyers; among them, a splinkling [sprinkling] of Britishers. The port being closed, the vessels are lying empty & idle. Moored out at the farthest breakwater are 4 or 5 German "tramps" that Russian destroyers have lately captured in the Black Sea & brought in here for internment. The best Hotels in the place face seawards over the Boulevard. At the S. end of thiBoulevard is a monument of peculiar interest to all Britishers - ie a cannon, set up on a granite pedestal, on which is a long inscription commemorating the fact that the gun isa relic of H.M.S. "Tiger" a British paddle-frigate that ran ashore during the Crimean War some 3 miles E. of Odessa in a fog & which was smashed to pieces by the Russian Artillery & eventually blown up.
We went past the Duma, the Museum & The Royal Opera House - said to be the 2nd finest in Europe.
We "razzle-dazzled" in town all day & finished up with tea & "spamonie" ["spumoni"] ices at Fanconi's - the resteraint [restaurant].
