Description
Russian General & Admiral at Archangel, our transport & naval officers & a number of the British colony were all down seeing us off. It was really splendid of them all. Dr. Inglis was carried in mid-air & as we marched across to the train they flung flowers at us & the Consul's wife gave us each a little "Ikon" card for luck. We felt quite like Tommies en route for the front! After we boarded the train & were waiting for our engine to get up steam, the Russian soldiers sang & danced all their national dances, so weird & picturesque, but they do dance most beautifully. Then they sang the different nathional anthems - Russian, French, Serbian & English. We finally steamed out of the station at 12.30 admidst "ringing" cheers. It was worth being deadly sea-sick that send off!!
All along the line the authorities are most courteous & treat us with great deference - but oh dear they are primitive in their "comforts".
We really got a shock when boarded the train & saw our "habitation-to-be" for a fortnight to come. Filthy wasn't in it - quite a number of "visitors"
