Description
The whole life of the Russian people reminds one, that they are a religious people; for everywhere there is the "Ikon" or sacred religious picture. It is the first characteristic evidence of "Russia" to meet one's eye on entering & the last to be seen as one leaves, any private house or public place. In the streets & at railway stations, in hotels, post offices, shops & warehouses, in private houses, rich & poor alike, in government houses, indeed in every public place there is the "Ikon" - most frequently representing The Holy Mother & Child - & its little lamp burning before it.
After bidding adieu to our nice peasant woman - "dospidánia" ["Do svidaniya"]- we went on to an old church & had a good look in, as the windows were open. Even the village churches are gorgeous. Inside the walls are painted with biblical illustrations & such a lot of shining gold & of course "Ikons" everywhere - some of them beautifully jewelled.
In a field about ¼ of a mile away was a churchyard - just a field full of wooden crosses rough pieces of wood nailed together. Some just
