Description
shelves pots, pans & china plates. Then behind lies the hay loft, where half the family sleeps in summer! Living rooms& stables are practically under one roof. Often there are pot flowers in the windows, on the floor are beautifully colored [coloured] hand made mats & always, the cottages are remarkably clean. The women dress in cotton skirts & blouses & on their heads wear brightly colored [coloured] kerchiefs & strings & strings of beads round their necks & on Sundays & holidays, they bedeck themselves with flowers & bright colored [coloured] ribbons. The men wear a kind of rough dress with high boots & cotton blouses & in cold weather all men, women & children wear sheep-skins - coats, waistcoats, hats, boots & gloves. The staple food is home-made rye bread - The chief art in eating is to find ways of consuming the largest possible quantity of bread! For special occasions the women bake "pirogi" - i.e. pastry filled with cabbage
& meat. Every cottage of course has it's [its] "Samovar" (tea-urn) & tea is drunk all day & every day, very, weak, very pale & without milk.
