Description
been up here with us - to dear knows where!
We're told we'll probably be off in ½ an hour or so now - the whole army is retreating & the outlook is black - verra' black. The tents have all disappeared, down & away to the base & the scene is one of desolation here. A staff car just going off to headquarters & our mail bag is going with it, so letters being collected - this will probably never reach you - cheer oh "are we downhearted?" "No"!
"All packed up & nowhere to go" - !!
Such is the plight of the S.W.H./

Oct: 20th 1916 "S.W.H."
The dusty high-way!

Just a few lines sitting by the roadside - refugées [refugees] minus a home. We kept our Union Jack flying till the very last, but at midday today, down it had to come - sad but true. The Serbs & Russians are fighting magnificantly [magnificently], but the odds are against them. The poor, gallant little army of Serbians have had a terrible "hashing up", but they've fought like devils.
