Description
all the same - from what, Staniovitch, our C.O., tells me it's been "touch & go" on several occasions - he, himself, never for one moment thought we would get away. Staniovitch is a splendid little man, so brave & cool & it's thanks chiefly to him, that we are where we are. He & all his officers, in fact the whole crowd, officers & men alike, have been more than good to us all the time & we've come to look on them all as very real friends indeed. On the whole, I think they think we're not a "bad lot" - & we afford them some amusement, most certainly our clothes do anyhow! They think our attire "unusual"! Perhaps they are it is, but they're it's sensible! A shower of rain, for instance, will produce oilskins & sou'westers, which no fisherman in the wettest day in the W. of Scotland could beat! The size of our boots are designed for a flood & we affect hats of uncompromising sternness. No mountain climber, no huntress of wild beasts ever wore clothing so abnormally practical as we do! It even soars, in some cases, to masculinity!! In consequence, we "guileless maidens" always nervously explain to Serbian & Russian
