Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.
Description for this print from the original index page from the publication:
"The Custom House is from the plans of Baldassare Longhena. On the right are the Ferro and Corner palaces, the former of which has become the Grand Hotel, the latter the seat of the Prefecture of the Province. And the construction of this church was decreed in 1680 as a votive offering on the cessation of the Plague which had just afflicted Venice. It was therefore commenced in 1631 and finished in 1682, from the design and under the direction of Baldassare Longhena who, as is believed, modelled it on the description left by Polifilo in the XV century. It contains paintings by Marco Basaiti, Titian, Tintoretto, Salviati, and Palma the younger. Annually on the 21 November this church was visited in great state by the Doge and chief dignitaries of the Republic."
