Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.
Giudecca is a collection of eight islands (joined by the typical snakes-and-ladders arrangement of canals and bridges) which started life as a fishing village around 500 AD. Soon market gardens followed and eventually, during the 19th century, it became an upmarket address full of grand homes. Hungry for land (a commodity lacking in Venice) the Industrial Age added shipyards, factories and even a film studio to the sprawling estates.
