Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.
The church was founded in the 11th Century by Mauro Tosello and his son Bartolomeo, who used it to house the arm of St Bartholomew that they had brought from Apulia in 1043. The church was dedicated to the prophet Jeremiah, an old testament figure, like the dedicatees of San Giobbe and San Moise, reflecting the influence of the orthodox church in Venice. . The present church dates from a complete rebuilding, following demolition, by the Brescian priest/architect Carlo Corbellini from 1753, due to the damage sustained during the Austrian bombardment of 1749. The first mass was celebrated on 27th April 1760, while this work continued.
